REDWOOD WINS NCS GAME 2 - SWEEPS WASHINGTON HS IN 3

Visiting Washington HS of Fremont came prepared  to play some great volleyball but the Giants were ready for them!

Game one saw Sierra Dawson set the tempo with some tremendous saves and sets. The rallies were tremendous as Washington, much like Terra Linda, played stingy defense and kept filling in the holes on their side of the net.

Ursula and Lizzzie  poured in the big hits for the Giants as they found a way to overcome the very tall and gifted OH for Alameda who was making big hits and blocks of her own.

With the victory in game one on the books, Ursula scored several times with her cross-court hits. Always feared for her monster kills, our Montana State bound senior has been under the radar the past month with her now famous ‘dinkasaurus’ hits. How many times have we enjoyed watching Ursula come to the net as opponents closed in to try and block what they knew would be a thundering hit…only to scramble like that last person who desperately tries to get that final seat in “Musical Chairs”. Sorry – it just isn’t gonna happen….

If the big kill has been Ursula’s signature, this dinkasaurus thing she’s been scoring with must be just a lower case version of that signature.

Down 13-8 in game 2, Liz had a service run that evened the score, then served after an Alameda point to tie the contest at 14. Right after that Sophie turned on the afterburners and contributed some phenomenal digs and sets. DG may have played her best game of the season as she was on the floor returning balls destined to be kills. Each save by DG was converted into a Redwood point. Capturing the jolt of fire Sophie added to the court, the Giants surged to earn a 25-15 win.

Game 3 began with stuff by Liz at the net quickly followed by a nice kill by Hannah and an even bigger kill by Alyssa. And just when you thought we’d seen the last of Ursula’s dinkasaurus, she treated us to a ‘net crawler’ as her ‘dink’ travelled a few feet on top of the net before finding the floor beyond the reach of diving Washington defenders.

Lucia was firing on all cylinders as well as she kept the Giants on track as the persistent Washington-ians brought their best efforts in a final grab for a win as they tied the score at 20.  Lucia showed why she is so formidable and versatile as she nailed a kill that no one wanted to get in front of.

Between points 20 and 25 for Redwood, we saw tremendous rallies and great defense by Kelsey, Ursula, and Hannah upfront. Liz continued her excellent service run for the night and drove home the win for a closely fought 26-24 Redwood victory. It was very fitting that Lucia, one of our best hitters, scored the winning point on a tip.

From Coach Katie:

"Ursula had 14 kills while Lucia notched 13 kills and 20 assists. Liz had 6 service points and multiple kills. Lindsey was awesome with 10 digs and all around hustle as usual."

The spotlight belonged to Sophie for her excellent all around play. She earned 8 service points and 6 digs for the Giants. Each of those contributions seems to have come just at the right time and halted any momentum the persist Washington girls were developing.

NCS Game 2 in the books for Redwood. Let's keep it going!
